The process of producing hot mix asphalt in a drum mix plant is a continuous, automated operation involving several steps: 

Feeding aggregates: Different-sized aggregates, such as gravel, sand, and crushed stone, are fed from separate hoppers, known as cold feed bins, onto a conveyor.

Screening: The aggregates then pass through a vibrating screen to remove any oversized materials before they enter the drying and mixing drum.

Drying and heating: The aggregates are transferred to one end of a large, rotating drum. A powerful burner located inside the drum dries the aggregates and heats them to the required temperature.

Mixing: As the heated aggregates move along the drum, bitumen (the asphalt binder) and filler materials are added and mixed. The inside of the drum is fitted with internal paddles, or "flights," which lift and tumble the materials to ensure uniform mixing.

Discharging: The completed HMA is discharged from the other end of the drum onto a load-out conveyor. It is then transferred to either a storage silo or directly into waiting dump trucks for transportation to the construction site.

Pollution control: Most modern drum mix plants are equipped with dust collection systems to minimize the environmental impact from the heating and drying process.

Stationary plants: Permanently installed in a fixed location and designed for large-scale, long-term road projects, such as major highways or urban road networks.

Mobile plants: Mounted on a portable chassis with wheels, allowing them to be moved between different job sites. They are ideal for smaller-scale projects and construction in remote areas.
